To bring innovation to the supply of energy in Great Britain by applying modern technology to deliver cost effective solutions to major energy related issues such as Fuel Poverty and Climate Change in a commercial environment and help its customers save energy and save money.
Utilita was first formed in 2003 with the intention of bringing innovation to the energy supply industry and in particular address the issues outlined in the Energy White Paper of February 2001: (i) Climate Change; (ii) Security of Supply; (iii) Fuel Poverty; and (iv) Ageing Infrastructure. We recognised that the most cost effective way to address all of these issues was to encourage consumers to use less energy. This still remains the case today.
The business was launched in Q4 2004 and quickly established a presence in the residential dual fuel market with its energy efficiency product "Do You Get It". Within the following 12 months the business also got involved in an early smart metering project. Market developments later in 2005, which caused a number of small businesses to fail, forced Utilita to temporarily exit the supply market.
Following a period of development, Utilita re-launched, in conjunction with its partner – Secure Meters (UK) Limited, in April 2007 with the specific aim of addressing Fuel Poverty by using smart meters to both reduce costs (and prices) and to help consumers reduce their energy consumption. The Utilita product, get smart, set a new standard in both service and price for pre-payment customers.
By April 2009 Utilita had installed over 15,000 smart meters in the residential market, more than any other player in the industry. It had also established itself as the market leader in delivering modern, low priced, pre-payment energy services.
Having further refined its services and product, Utilita has now installed nearly 25,000 smart meters, and is currently widening its footprint to bring its get smart product to more and more customers in Great Britain.
How it works
We currently install 4 pieces of equiptment in our customers homes. An electricity meter, a gas meter, a freedom unit and a communications hub. As a customer you can currently have a dual fuel installation or an electricity only installation.

What is energy efficiency?
What’s all this about energy-saving advice?
Usually, the term ‘energy efficiency’ is used to describe the attempt to achieve a similar result by using less energy, e.g. the lighting and heating of a house. It can also refer to everything from small changes such as more energy-efficient appliances and computers in the home to more efficient power stations or energy saving in a business.
One of the more obvious examples of energy efficiency is the use of compact fluorescent (CFL) light bulbs, more commonly called energy efficient bulbs. These can use as much as fives times less energy than a conventional bulb while producing the same amount of light.
What’s the difference between energy efficiency and energy-saving?
Though the two are often used interchangeably, efficiency is just one aspect of energy-saving. Energy-Saving can also include technologies such as automated light systems that only turn on when they detect movement or changes in behaviour such as encouraging individuals to turn appliances off standby.
What can energy efficiency mean for you?
In your home, energy efficiency will mostly apply to electrical appliances and heating. Successive Governments have persuaded electrical appliance manufacturers to produce increasingly low-energy devices, such as refrigerators, televisions, washing machines and even desktop computers.
There are some simple energy efficiency measures that can be taken in the home like draught-proofing windows and doors. Replacing standard, incandescent bulbs with efficient, modern energy-saving bulbs can save you pounds every year. These efficient light bulbs create the same amount of light but at a lower wattage than a normal bulb, for example, an ordinary 60 watt bulb is equivalent to 13 18 Watt energy saving light bulbs.
When shopping for new electrical appliances you should seriously consider those appliances that have the most efficient rating. All major manufacturers in Europe will have labelled their products with a label similar to the example below. Try to buy an A-Rated appliance if possible as these are the most energy efficient.
